Press Association appoints Microsoft’s Darren as social media editor

<
The Press Association has appointed Darren Waters, editor-in-chief of Microsoft UK, to the new role of social media editor.

It is the second time in less than a month that PA has turned to the Silicon Valley company to fill a senior role, following the appointment of Pete Clifton, the head of MSN UK, as its new editor-in-chief in October.

PA said that Waters, who will start on 1 December, has been given the task of putting “social media at the heart of the newsroom”.

Tony Watson, managing director of PA, said: “We are delighted to have appointed someone of Darren’s calibre and experience to what will be a vital role in PA’s strategy of becoming a digital-focused media agency.”

At Microsoft UK, Waters has been responsible for all editorial content on the MSN UK portal, and across the Bing apps on Windows including news, sport, travel and finance.

He had previously been responsible for MSN UK’s social media strategy.

“I’m delighted to be joining a vibrant newsroom that provides world-class multi-platform journalism to publishers and media organisations around the UK,” said Waters.

Like Clifton, who spent 15 years at the BBC, Waters has spent most of his 17 years in the media industry working in roles at the corporation - predominantly within BBC News Online.
